John,
Great to hear from you and to know I'm not alone with my net fascination! Funny you should mention Boro's nets, I do remember them being very taught and quite shallow. In about the late eighties Brighton drew 2-2 with you at Ayrsome and Curbishley's goal for us banged straight back out. We were 2-0 down I think. I wasn't there - just saw the goals on South Today. I liked Ayrsome Park a lot - a traditional old ground with a lot of character - I liked the goals too. Bernie Slaven was always banging in thirty yarders into them, wasn't he? It wasn't such a good scoreline when I went. John Crumplin (left back) made an awful error for your first.
The play-off final was depressing. I still have mild feelings of hatred for Tommy Johnson who scored two goals that day.
I'd be happy to discuss football grounds with you, drop me an email. I have yet to do any non-league in the North East but have visited Ayrsome, Victoria Ground and the Stadium of Light.
Did you ever climb on the stands at Ayrsome Park - because then you'd be Iddler on the roof! (sorry)

What a thourily absorbing site. I now know Im not alone!. Particularly enjoyed the old piece on goal nets and stantions. Im a Boro fan and remember fondly our seemingly odd goals at Ayresome. The back stantion at the Holgate end had been bent square resulting in a net so tight the ball sprung out every single time. Once as ball boy I saw a young Paul Stewart score a cracker for Blackpool and their sizable following didnt even celebrate thinking it had missed until he ran off celebrating!. I now own the left hand upright of this goal for the record. Have you hopped many in the Northern League?, Billingham Synthonia is probably the pick, but they have been fuelled by Boros money in recent years so I think thats cheating. Drop me a line and share yout thoughts on any non league grounds (or Ayresome for that matter) round my way.
I was also at you Ayresome debut as well, right at the end of the season. Notts County beat us in the play offs and then your mob in the final.
